While the mugs are commonly credited online to the company Dat'l Do-It, D.D.I. actually only started manufacturing these in 2010 - but the design dates back as far as the 1970s! Unfortunately, little is known right now about the original creator of the mugs or who originally produced them, but i will keep digging! during my research (aka me emailing Dat'l Do-It's customer service representative lmao, thank you Katie!!), i discovered that Dat'l Do-It has only ever produced tomato, vegetable, chicken, potato, onion, and mushroom mugs, and all of the other designs came from some other nebulous point in the design's history. you can generally tell if a mug is Dat'l Do-It by the font - the vintage ones have a curly bit on the Os and Ps that the Dat'l Do-It mugs don't! Dat'l Do-It mugs also have finer lineart and shading on the illustrations, while the vinatge ones have thicker lines and more solid colors.
out of my 5, my tomato, potato, chicken, and vegetable mugs are Dat'l Do-It branded, but my onion one doesn't have a stamp on it, so it's probably vintage, maybe from the 70s! who knows!
this facebook post and this reddit post have shared photos of their collections, which seem to be the most complete collections i've seen online. the redditor mentions in the comments that they're looking for chili and corn chowder to finish the set, but i haven't been able to find any photos of these mugs so i am leaving them off of the checklist for now.
collection checklist:
my quest is currently in-person thrift store finds only. i've seen plenty of these online but just ordering it takes away the thrill of the hunt :P
if you own any please email me a photo olliveeny@gmail.com or leave a message in my guestbook!
